From the Editor

Dear reader,

Welcome to another exciting issue of Creature Companion. Read our highlight on DINKWADs (Double Income, No Kids, With a Dog). As more and more couples decide to delay parenthood, they are increasingly turning to pets to provide them with the ‘family vibe’ in the interim. Learn about this new trend in our COVER STORY.

In our HEALTH & WELLNESS segment, we bring you two interesting features—Caring for the Senior Dog and Pet Euthanasia. I believe both will be helpful to pet owners with senior or terminally ill pets.

DR KD answers all in ASK THE VET. Aneesha gives grooming tips in GROOMER KNOWS ALL. In our BREED PROFILE, we bring you the Flat Coated Retriever. Nicknamed the ‘Peter Pan’ of Retriever dogs for its ever-youthful outlook on life, the Flat-Coat is a joker, mischief maker, people pleaser, athlete—all rolled into one.

Congratulations, Simba and Bruna on being chosen PET OF THE MONTH for July and August.

Nikolas Platis of Sera instructs prospective aquarium hobbyists on how to set up an aquarium in HOBBY—the second of a series of instructive articles on aquarium-keeping and maintenance. Randhir Khare pays a touching tribute to his childhood sweethearts—Bijli & Toofaan—in PET MUSINGS.

There are several other interesting treasures waiting to be read inside—read excerpts from As Cute As A Pug by Dhruv Raman Singh. Irene James, director, Whiskers & Tails and winner of the 2010 Small Business Award, shares her plans for her new grooming salon franchising and training business in INTERVIEW.

For those that read my last editorial and are wondering if I finally adopted a dog, I did! His name is Eddie Rawat and he’s a chocolate brown Labrador Retriever. Although Labs are the most commonly adopted pets in the country, I have never had one before, and found that I had underestimated its abounding energy! Several destroyed slippers and failed attempts at housebreaking later, I enrolled him for a 1-week training programme at IT’S PAWSSIBLE—a pet sitting and training service in Pune. It worked miracles! In a week’s time Eddie has learnt how to ‘sit’ and drop garbage from his mouth at the command, ‘out’. Currently, Eddie is learning how to be well-behaved while still being a happy go lucky puppy. He is curled at my feet, gnawing on a rawhide bone as I write this. Adopting Eddie made me realise how difficult it is for regular (untrained) people to teach commands to their pets, as well as, to make them understand that it is ‘not okay’ to relieve themselves in the house. Failed housebreaking is the number 1 problem that leads to pet abandonment. We will do a detailed feature on the subject in a future issue to help first-time owners train their pups. I will keep you posted on the adventures of Eddie in future issues. In the meanwhile, happy reading, and enjoy the monsoons!
