Food habits: Kaloo's staple diet is meat-flavoured dog food. He also loves the bones of lamb chops (which he gets as a treat) and leftover homemade chicken and vegetable soup.

The inner workings of Kaloo: Kaloo likes to laze on the charpoy in the front garden. This gives him a comfortable place to lie and also elevates him above his usual height, so he can watch the passing traffic. He loves his veterinarian, Dr Jyotsna Triguna, who has never been afraid of his teeth. Kaloo is kind enough to eat the results of all his owner's failed cookery attempts.

The truth about Kaloo: Kaloo was originally a street dog. Although he is extremely clever and can be fierce, he is really too small to be scary, so when he was living on the street, he enlisted the help of a much bigger but much less clever dog. This macho dog, Brown Dog, was "adopted" by Kaloo and brought to our home. We couldn't resist him so we adopted them both! Brownie is the brawn and Kaloo is the brain.

Favourite pastime: In the heat of the day, Kaloo likes to find a cool room with a nice comfortable carpet and lie there for hours.
